Fitted sliding wardrobe being measured during installation in a modern bedroom, showing made-to-measure design and professional fitting

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Sliding Wardrobes

Below are answers to some of the most common questions we’re asked about bespoke sliding wardrobes, materials, installation times and design options.

  • Yes - this is something we specialise in.

Many homes across South Wales have sloping ceilings, alcoves, chimney breasts or uneven walls, particularly in loft rooms and older properties. All of our sliding wardrobes are designed and manufactured to measure, allowing us to work around awkward angles and irregular spaces rather than trying to force standard units to fit.

We take precise on-site measurements, design each wardrobe to follow the exact shape of the room, and manufacture everything in-house. This means doors, frames and interiors can be cut and adjusted to suit sloping ceilings, out-of-square walls and restricted spaces - maximising storage while keeping a clean, fitted finish.

Because everything is bespoke, no space is “too awkward” - it’s simply a design challenge we plan for from the start.

  • We use melamine-faced chipboard for all external framework and interior components.

    This material is:

    • Maintenance-free – no painting, sealing or special care required

    • Strong and durable – designed to handle daily use without warping or cracking

    • Easy to clean – ideal for bedrooms and family homes

    • Available in a wide range of finishes to suit different styles and colour schemes

Because everything is made to measure, panels are cut precisely to fit the space, ensuring a clean, built-in finish from floor to ceiling.

  • Our sliding doors are available in 4mm safety-backed coloured glass and mirror finishes.

    This means:

    • Glass is safety-backed to remain stable if impacted

    • Safer and sturdier should the worst happen and something fall against it

    • Smooth, high-quality finishes that won’t peel or fade

    • A wide range of colours and finishes to match existing décor

Mirror options are ideal for reflecting light and making smaller rooms feel larger, while coloured glass offers a clean, modern look.

  • All of our sliding wardrobes are fitted with heavy-duty steel handles and professional-grade running systems.

    Features include:

    • Strong steel frames and handles for long-term durability

    • Anti-jump wheels to keep doors securely on their tracks

    • Smooth, quiet operation designed for daily use

These systems ensure doors glide effortlessly while remaining stable and secure over time.

  • Rather than relying solely on an online gallery, we prefer to show examples of our work in person, where you can properly see finishes, colours and build quality.

During our free home design visit, we bring:

    • Samples of materials and finishes

    • Examples of door styles and colours

    • A large selection of photos from previous installations

This allows you to see how different designs look in real homes, ask questions, and compare options properly - all while we assess your space and discuss what would work best for you.

We’re always happy to show recent projects and designs similar to your room, so you can feel confident in both the quality of our work and the final result.

  • Most Wilkins Sliding Wardrobes installations are completed in one day.

All wardrobes are measured, designed and prepared in advance, with final cutting and adjustments carried out in our van outside the property. This allows us to:

    • Minimise dust and disruption inside your home

    • Keep the installation clean and tidy

    • Complete the work efficiently without rushing

In most cases, once we arrive on the day of fitting, the wardrobe is installed, adjusted and ready to use by the end of the day. Larger or more complex designs may occasionally take longer, but this will always be discussed in advance.

  • When designing a fitted wardrobe for an awkwardly shaped room, the most important factor is working with the shape of the space, not against it. Sloping ceilings, uneven walls, alcoves and chimney breasts can all be incorporated into a well-planned design when the wardrobe is made to measure.

    Key things to consider include:

    Accurate, on-site measurements

Awkward rooms are rarely square. Precise measurements taken in the home ensure the wardrobe follows the exact lines of the room, creating a seamless, built-in finish with no wasted space.

    Using difficult areas properly

Low sections under sloping ceilings, tight corners and narrow sections can often be used for shelving, drawers or shoe storage, rather than standard hanging space. Designing the interior around the room’s shape makes a huge difference to usability.

    Sliding doors for restricted spaces

Sliding doors are ideal for awkward rooms because they don’t require clearance to open. This makes them perfect for tighter layouts, loft rooms and bedrooms where space is limited.

Internal layout that suits how you live

The interior should be planned around what you actually need to store. A bespoke design allows for a mix of hanging, drawers and shelving positioned where they work best within the available space.

    Professional planning from the start

Because every Wilkins Sliding Wardrobe is designed and manufactured to measure, awkward spaces are planned for from the outset rather than adjusted on the day. This results in a cleaner finish and a wardrobe that feels part of the room, not an afterthought.

  • For small bedrooms, the key is choosing a sliding wardrobe that maximises storage without making the room feel cramped. A made-to-measure design allows the wardrobe to work with the space rather than overpower it.

    Sliding doors instead of hinged

Sliding doors are ideal for smaller rooms because they don’t need clearance to open. This keeps walkways clear and allows furniture to be positioned closer to the wardrobe.

    Use mirrors or lighter finishes

Mirrored doors or lighter coloured finishes help reflect light and make the room feel larger and brighter. These are especially effective in compact or darker bedrooms.

Design the interior around your needs

In smaller rooms, the internal layout is just as important as the exterior. A mix of hanging space, drawers and shelving designed specifically for how you use the wardrobe helps avoid wasted space.

Make use of the full height

A floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobe maximises storage without increasing the footprint of the room, keeping everything neat and built in rather than bulky.

    Accurate measuring and bespoke design

Small bedrooms leave little margin for error. Having the wardrobe measured, designed and made to measure ensures a precise fit that doesn’t overwhelm the space.

  • The main advantage of a custom-made sliding wardrobe is that it’s designed specifically for your room, rather than forcing a standard unit to fit.

Made to fit your space exactly

Custom wardrobes are measured and built to the exact dimensions of your room. This allows sloping ceilings, uneven walls and awkward corners to be fully utilised, with no wasted space or unsightly gaps.

    Better use of storage

Because the interior is designed around how you actually use the wardrobe, storage is far more efficient. Hanging space, drawers and shelving are positioned where they work best, rather than being dictated by a fixed layout.

    Cleaner, built-in finish

A made-to-measure wardrobe runs neatly from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, giving a fitted, built-in look that standard wardrobes can’t achieve.

    Choice of materials and finishes

Custom wardrobes allow you to choose door styles, finishes and colours that suit your room, whether that’s mirrors to reflect light, coloured glass for a modern look, or subtle finishes to blend into the space.

    Stronger construction and smoother operation

Custom sliding wardrobes are built using durable materials and professional running gear, resulting in sturdier doors, smoother operation and better long-term reliability than many off-the-shelf options.

  • Yes - all of our sliding wardrobes are designed to be tailored to your existing bedroom décor, not the other way around.

Because every wardrobe is made to measure, we can match the design, colour and finish to suit your room. This includes:

    • Coloured glass and mirror finishes in a wide range of tones

    • Frame colours and handle styles to complement existing furniture

    • Interior finishes that blend with flooring, walls and décor

During our free home design visit, we bring material samples and finished examples so you can see how different options work in your own lighting and space. This makes it easy to choose a combination that fits naturally with your room rather than standing out for the wrong reasons.

The result is a wardrobe that looks like it belongs in the room - not something added afterwards.
